A quick glance into most elementary classrooms offers a visible mosaic of
nationalities. Indeed, these classrooms reflect the diversity found more
broadly in our society. It is my sincere belief that we need to give children and
students opportunities to experience and learn about as many cultures and different views
as possible. Immersing them in the rich pool of human genres will open their
minds to a world abundant in opportunities for creativity and exploration.

From concept to illustration to dialogue, the
ever-lovable Patches the Beaver™ will capture and hold a child's attention and, more
importantly, teach the values of diversity and harmony in today's multicultural society.
Even down to the details -- his vest of patches from around the world -- Patches the Beaver™'s character is rich with multicultural imagery. The multi-colored and -textured fabrics
symbolize the cultures that fashion our society -- each piece depends on the others for
its strength. For more than 9 years, Ive passionately created, researched, refined
and "child-tested" a fictional character I knew would not only open the door to
the awareness of other cultures, but would also promote the understanding that all
cultures play a crucial part in our countrys larger picture. (To read about my
journey, click here.)
| "The story of compassion
for those who are different and hope for acceptance and a place to belong is one that all
children should hear over and over. The book encourages valuing of all and bridges a cross
cultural understanding of our interconnectedness as children learn about others who share
the earth with us." -Heather Raymond, Ph.D, Principal of Norwood

| Kids everywhere love Patches the Beaver™! Over the years, while reading
my early book drafts to children, I've seen how Patches the Beaver™ first attracts young
readers, then prompts them to ask questions about other cultures. Their enthusiasm has
been contagious! "What a cute animal!" "What is a beaver?" "Who
lives in my neighborhood?" and hundreds of other questions have demonstrated that my
efforts have paid off and that kids potential for learning from Patches the Beaver™ is endless!
| "The
books are in the daycare and the kids love the story...it has
brought a lot of smiles to their faces. The enjoyment of
having them sit a listen to a story is very refreshing and the
questions that come from their curiosity.
"I am glad I have met you and it was nice remembering
stories of the many people I have met over the years. Like
your book and the statement 'We are all Connected' is so
true."
